Writing Strategy
C.E.R.
(Claim, Evidence, Reasoning)

What is C.E.R?
C.E.R. stands for Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning. It gives students a clear structure for writing about what they think and why they think it.

How to Use C.E.R.
C - Answer the question
E - Use evidence from the text
R - Explain your thinking
Practice at Home
You can use it at home by asking your child what they believe about a story, what part of the text supports their idea, and why that support matters.
Here is another practical way to use C.E.R. in a realistic conversation: A parent might say, “I think we should leave now (Claim) because the movie starts in ten minutes (Evidence), so if we wait, we will miss the beginning (Reasoning).”
C.E.R. helps children turn their ideas into confident, well-supported writing.
